CURA – Collaborative Union for Research and Advocacy

CURA is our core initiative, focusing on marine conservation, research, education, sustainable eco-tourism, and community outreach.  CURA combines international partnerships and advanced technologies to generate actionable insights and protect the Red Sea’s biodiversity and unique ecosystem.

In Arabic, “CURA” can refer to “healing” or “cure” or, depending on the context, “care” or “concern”

CURA is a coalition of organizations and individuals united to promote biodiversity protection through conservation research for societal benefit. The alliance seeks to amplify voices, share resources, and enhance impact through advanced technology and conservation research and community outreach for the benefit of future generations.

Aims

CURA is a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to the protection and conservation of the Red Sea’s unique marine ecosystems. Our aim is to harmonize environmental conservation with sustainable tourism by bringing together world-leading institutions including KAUST, NEOM, Danah Marine Research, Marine Conservation International, Nova Southeastern University (NSU Florida), and the University of York.

Through this collaborative framework, CURA seeks to:

  • Safeguard the biodiversity of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and megafauna.
  • Promote responsible eco-tourism that benefits local communities and future generations.
  • Deliver world-class marine research to inform policy and conservation action.
  • Empower local stakeholders through education, participation, and sustainable development.

Objectives

Conservation Objectives

  • Identify and protect critical marine biodiversity hotspots.
  • Conduct ecological monitoring, including tagging and surveys of megafauna.
  • Restore degraded habitats through science-based conservation actions.

Research & Innovation Objectives

  • Leverage interdisciplinary expertise to advance marine science.
  • Develop technologies and methodologies to enhance conservation data.
  • Use scientific findings to shape sustainable tourism policy and practices.

Sustainable Tourism Objectives

  • Position the Red Sea as a premier eco-tourism destination.
  • Support the development of environmentally conscious tourism facilities and services.
  • Educate visitors and stakeholders on marine conservation and responsible tourism practices.

Stakeholder Engagement Objectives

  • Collaborate with local communities, governments, NGOs, and private sectors.
  • Promote community-led conservation through education and citizen science.
  • Facilitate inclusive participation that ensures shared benefits from eco-tourism.

CURA’s holistic approach reflects our shared commitment to healing and caring for the Red Sea—building a global model where ecological integrity and human development go hand in hand.

”I’ve spent my life studying the world’s oceans, but the Red Sea has a way of captivating even the most experienced ecologist. CURA is my way of bringing people together — scientists, advocates, communities — to protect a region that still holds so many secrets. It’s not just about conservation; it’s about care, curiosity, and collective responsibility.”
