New research from the Seychelles has provided the first detailed investigation of the fungal communities (mycobiome) living on the skin of reef sharks, including individuals with visible wounds. Researchers analysed samples from 46 blacktip reef sharks and one sicklefin lemon shark and found that wounded sharks did not exhibit significant differences in their skin fungal communities compared to healthy individuals. These findings suggest that sharks possess remarkably resilient skin ecosystems that may contribute to their well-known ability to resist infection and heal rapidly. The study also identified several fungal groups with potential antimicrobial properties, highlighting exciting avenues for future research into shark health, wound healing, and the role of marine microorganisms in disease resistance. Danah Marine Research contributed to the conception, funding, and fieldwork support for this important study conducted in the Seychelles.
